New research from the University of South Australia says that a daily serving of yogurt could be the next best food for people with high blood pressure. This could be a dollop of your morning cereal or a quick snack on the go.
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a serious condition that affects millions of Americans. Now, a new study suggests that there may be a simple way to help fight the disease, and it involves a snack you already have in your fridge. A recent study by scientists shows that people with high blood pressure who eat more yogurt tend to have lower blood pressure.
The study, which was done with the University of Maine, looked at the links between yogurt consumption, blood pressure, and risk factors for heart disease. It found that people with high blood pressure who ate yogurt had lower blood pressure.
More than a billion people around the world have hypertension, which means they have high blood pressure. This makes them more likely to get cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) like heart attack and stroke.
CVDs are the leading cause of death around the world. Every 36 seconds in the U.S. and every 12 minutes in Australia, someone dies from a CVD.
Dr. Alexandra Wade of the University of South Australia says this study adds to the evidence that yogurt can help people with high blood pressure.
“High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, so it’s important that we continue to find ways to reduce and regulate it,” Dr Wade said.
“Dairy foods, especially yogurt, may be capable of reducing blood pressure.
This is because dairy foods contain a range of micronutrients, including calcium, magnesium and potassium, all of which are involved in the regulation of blood pressure.
Yogurt is especially interesting because it also contains bacteria that promote the release of proteins which lowers blood pressure.”
This study showed that even small amounts of yogurt lowered the blood pressure of people with high blood pressure.
“And for those who consumed yogurt regularly, the results were even stronger, with blood pressure readings nearly seven points lower than those who did not consume yogurt.”
Another study looked at 915 adults who lived in their own homes. Using a meal frequency questionnaire, regular yogurt consumption was calculated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that 116 million Americans, or almost half of the population, have high blood pressure, which is one of the main causes of heart disease. Only 24% are in charge of their condition. Cardiovascular diseases, like heart attacks and strokes, are the leading cause of death and disability around the world. But researchers think that yogurt could help change that. The study referred to a different study from 2018 that observed that people with high blood pressure and who ate more than two yogurt servings in a week had a much lower risk of getting cardiovascular diseases than those who ate less than a single serving per month.
A new study found that people who eat yogurt more often are typically younger, female, and more educated. Researchers say another flaw in the study is that people didn’t say how much yogurt they thought was a serving or if it had high fat or sugar content.
The 2018 study did not find out if yogurt was good for people with high blood pressure or if it was good for people in general. However, the study from the University of South Australia and the University of Maine sheds some light on this question. The study found that yogurt was beneficial to people with high blood pressure. It helped lower their readings. However, it did not find any link between eating yogurt and lowering blood pressure in people who did not have hypertension. No matter what, researchers say that eating yogurt could help people with high blood pressure in some way.
Researchers say that future studies that look into the possible benefits of yogurt should continue to focus on people who are at risk.
